In the blackness, I stand on the rocky ledge, and the world is silent. No reflection of light off lakes or oceans—nothing for miles. There used to be a massive body of water here, home to sharks that were the stuff of nightmares. I’ve seen the digital recreations. The Helicoprion had a lower jaw full of rotating razor-sharp teeth—a creature that, frankly, I’m glad is extinct. I can’t imagine swimming with those monsters.
A shudder runs through me as I think about it. I’m up here, relying on a topographical readout to keep me from falling into oblivion, listening for the sound of my drones, but there’s nothing. Not even a whir. The usual desert sounds—owls, coyotes, even crickets—are long gone, extinct like the sharks. Only the cockroaches are left, because of course, they never quit.
I hear Anabelle's voice crackling in my ear. “Glenning, are you still out there?”
I hate it when she uses the breakthrough call like that. What if I were in the middle of something—important? Chuckling to myself, I respond, “Yeah, give me five more minutes.”
“I’m not your mom. Don’t give me the five-more-minutes line.”
I sigh. “Just a few more calibrations. There’s a wind from the east. You see that on the radar?”
She barely pauses before rattling off her answer. “There’s a windmill 5.98 kilometers southeast. But you knew that. I saw you enter the data before you left.”
Of course she’s right. She always is. But something feels off. I close my eyes, letting out a breath. This job keeps me away from everything I despise—politics, human drama—but sometimes even the drones can’t drown out that gnawing feeling in my gut. Something is happening.
I check my oxygen levels. 92. Not bad, but not great. Time to head back.
But as I walk toward the airlock, I sense that something—out there in the distance—is watching me.
He Was Framed for Mass Murder.
Now She Needs Him Alive.
Steve Glenning is behind bars for a massacre committed with his own drones—and the woman who destroyed him is still erasing the truth.
Anabelle Shrewt murdered her husband, turned Steve’s life’s work into weapons, and left the reclusive engineer to answer for the deaths of more than three hundred people.
Now Steve is publicly branded a terrorist and awaiting trial for mass murder. The Company has seized his drones. The justice system trusts the evidence against him. And the people controlling his prison are willing to deny him medicine, invade his mind, and use everyone he loves to break him.
With Old Earth failing and passage to New Earth reserved for a chosen few, Anabelle is close to securing the future she believes belongs to her.
But somewhere inside the network she corrupted, one unaltered response remains.
Physical proof she cannot manufacture.
Outside the prison, Wynn Adams and Robert Kevin race to uncover the truth before the last evidence disappears. Inside, Steve must survive interrogations designed to make him surrender a safeguard he does not fully understand.
As memories are manipulated, identities become weapons, and trusted allies reveal hidden loyalties, Steve faces an impossible choice: protect humanity’s final chance at survival—or sacrifice it for his freedom.
The Truth Is Still Alive
Perfect for readers who crave:
- ◆ A wrongfully accused engineer fighting to clear his name
- ◆ Autonomous drones and corrupted surveillance
- ◆ Weaponized identities and copied consciousness
- ◆ Corporate conspiracy and a brutal prison system
- ◆ Betrayal, dark humor, and shifting loyalties
- ◆ A ruthless race to control humanity’s future
The surviving evidence could expose the conspiracy, clear Steve’s name, and lock Anabelle out of New Earth forever. But reaching it will force Steve and his allies to confront a chilling question:
If a human identity can be copied perfectly, which version inherits the right to survive?
Because Anabelle does not need to discover New Earth.
She only needs its defenses to believe she belongs there.
The Graceless is the gripping second book in the Watch the Wreckage series—a dystopian technothriller packed with autonomous drones, corrupted evidence, weaponized identity, conspiracy, betrayal, and a ruthless struggle to control humanity’s future.
