An aging veteran with a bottle in his pack and little left to lose, Jessie follows abandoned rail lines through a country coming apart. An empty signal station looks like a place to disappear. But the children he encounters need more than a roof, and the old man who can barely look after himself becomes the person they count on.
Keeping them alive will take him through a hurricane, bitter cold, and a guarded town where shelter comes at a price. Food is scarce. Trust is dangerous. Even an open gate may come with rules that could separate them.
