Sloane Delaney and her daughters had abandoned the first floor of their home entirely. A tsunami wave, caused by a massive earthquake along the Pacific Rim, had overtaken their once-picturesque neighborhood in Cannon Beach, Oregon. The receded seawater left behind a thick, brown sludge coating the walls and floors. Yet, despite the disaster, Sloane found herself sleeping in peace for the first time in years.

She wasn’t worried about marauders or thieves. She hadn’t even boarded up the blown-out sliding glass door. Any opportunistic person—or animal—could have walked right into the disaster of a house and taken whatever was left. But those worries could wait. For now, Sloane just wanted to enjoy one solitary, peaceful night.

Across the street, in the sodden backyard of Larry Baker’s house, lay the reason for her peace—her abusive husband, Brady, dead from a single gunshot wound to the head. She didn’t pull the trigger, but she didn’t mind that it happened. With Brady gone, she and her daughters were finally safe. Or so she hoped.
